I live in phoenix and I am wondering what all I can put in my compost bin. I would like the compost for my veggie garden. Also do I have to put water in it every now and again or just leave it? How often should I turn it?

It’s really easier to figure what you shouldn’t put in it. You shouldn’t put meats or cooked items. Otherwise, all kind of peelings and trimming from veggies and fruit. Also, shredded paper/newspaper, Coffee grinds or most anything organic is fine.
I wouldn’t water it unless it becomes dry. The pile should generate heat in the middle, which is what helps to break-down the elements into good rich dirt. You should turn it periodically so that the heat can build up against different material instead of just generating heat in one spot. In Other words, keep it turned about once a week and it will break down much faster.

good luck

Egg shells, coffee grinds and fruit/veg peelings. It should be watered and turned a few times a week. Worms help.

I have one. Mine is a pile, not a bin.

Anything that is organic, veg peelings and weeds, soft shrub prunings avoid anything too woody, shredded paper and lawn mowing’s mixed and tea bags are good too. If it gets dry add some water but with enough green waste it is not usually necessary. In the Autumn leaves can be added and if you can shred them its better. You can even add old wool jumpers but not synthetic ones.! Good luck.

Turn it and moisten it once a week.

You can put anything that once lived. Leaves, veggies, wood (chipped or sawdust), etc with the exception of animal byproducts like grease, fat, meat, etc.

You can really put anything in there that you know will break down.
I do not believe that you need to put water in it.. I think that the items will decompose on their own.
But then again if Phoenix doesn’t get a lot of rainfall then maybe watering it down wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
